PhysicsQuest 2009

PhysicsQuest
http://www.physicscentral.com/experiment/physicsquest/index.cfm

PhysicsQuest is a middle school competition that consists of four physical science experiments centered on a mystery. The experiments are designed to be done by small groups in a classroom or after school setting. Each of the experiments gives students a clue that they need to solve the mystery. Classes can submit their answers online and be entered into a random drawing for prizes. PhysicsQuest kits are provided free to registered classrooms.

PhysicsQuest 2009: Spectra's PowerRegister Now: http://ultron.aps.org/forms/aps.cgi?ID=200901

Lucinda Hene began life as the most ordinary of children. She did fairly well in school and was on the swim team but she longed to stand out. Child of brilliant laser scientists, Lucinda dreamed of being more than normal, of being extraordinary. Then one day it happened. She felt something inside her begin to change. She changed from normal Lucinda Hene to the powerful Spectra, a super hero with the powers of a laser. To unlock the mystery of her past and her powers Spectra must defeat the most evil of super villains, the beautiful yet deadly Miss Alignment.

Follow Spectra as she learns about her past and about the history of the powerful instrument she has become. In PhysicsQuest 2009 students will learn about why lasers are one of the most important inventions of the 20th century. They will do experiments to show why a laser is not just a cat toy, but an extraordinary tool for unlocking the mysteries of our world. All the while students will be helping Spectra and her gang save the world from the clutches of Miss Alignment.

Seminar Descriptions:

Teaching Writing: Structure and Style
A Two-Day Seminar for Teachers, Parents, Tutors, College Students
Cost: $89.00/participant (2nd family member ½ price)

The structure and style syllabus teaches models and techniques for English composition which logically build upon each other, allowing students to become familiar and competent with a variety of writing formats and styles. As opposed to many "creative" writing approaches, this more classical system stresses modeling and builds a firm foundation of specific skills.

Students first make a "key word outline" and then rewrite from their notes, thus being freed from the problem of what to write about, so they are able to clearly focus on how to write well. As they master each structural model and stylistic technique, they develop great confidence, and consequently great creativity. The syllabus then gradually moves the student from dictated content toward "the blank page" using:

Eight different structural models, including:
* Note making and summarizing from notes; limiting skills.
* Summarizing narrative stories with the story sequence chart.
* Summarizing references (without copying the encyclopedia).
* Library research reports using multiple references and fused outlines.
* Topic - clincher paragraph format, techniques for titling.
* Creative writing, letters and writing from pictures.
* Formal essays and critique formats.

The Syllabus in Style introduces specific techniques to help students:
* "Dress-up" each paragraph with six different tools.
* Use a variety of sentence "openers."
* Judiciously choose literary "decorations."
* Learn English grammar in the context of USING it, rather than just memorizing terms and identifying parts of speech.

High School Essay Intensive
A One-Day Seminar for High School age students and teachers
Cost: $50.00/participant (parents $25 if attending with student*)

The High School Essay Prep class is an excellent way to get immediate experience and inside tips on how to do your best on the timed, 25 minute response to a prompt required on the new SAT test. Participants will actually write two full essays, carefully study and then apply the College Board evaluation criteria to sample essays, while receiving a detailed booklet of resources and suggestions for continued practice.

Additionally, students will learn special structure and style tools for use in composing the college application "personal essay"—an entirely different type of writing task. The complete process will be presented: choosing the question, creating the outline, and polishing a final version. Participants will leave with a clear concept of the task, their own outline for an actual personal essay, and several new tricks and techniques to add to their repertoire.

Although this seminar is specifically designed for those who will be taking the SAT or submitting college applications within the next 1-2 years (and especially those teaching such students), it is also useful for general writing practice, tools and tips. It is open to all students, regardless of their experience with IEW courses or materials. A lot of actual writing is done during this six-hour class.

*Parents who wish only to observe are welcome to do so, space available. Paying participants will receive a space at a table and a handout.

Some comments from past attendees:

"I really didn't want to come, but my mom made me, and I am soooo glad I did. It's really going to help me, and I'm not so worried about the SAT essay any more."
"I took the SAT last spring and did okay, but I'm going to do it again and go for a better score. With this new information, I'm very sure I'll do better on the essay portion."
"Mr. Pudewa’s seminar is like the rock concert of writing classes."
"This workshop just de-mystified the whole thing for me. Thanks!"
"Although I've been in many of your classes before, this was awesome. I especially loved the strategies for quickly planning and outlining a short essay, and the advice about how to formulate an opinion and just go for it, even if you're a little undecided about the question. Also the TRIAC paragraph model is awesome—it makes it so easy to organize a good paragraph."
"Really glad I came. I learned a lot. (And I got out of school, too!)"
"I came to be with my son, but I actually had a lot of fun myself. I sure wish I knew some of this when I was going into college!"

Eveready Speech and Debate Club Information

I am very excited about the upcoming year of speech and debate. Our preparations for the coming year are coming together very nicely.

The next and final family information meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 4th at 2:00 at The Chapel. If you have signed up for the club or if you are interested in joining the club but you were not able to attend the previous meeting, I believe it would be beneficial to attend this meeting.

The registration deadline has been set for August 15th. You may register at the information meeting or I could e-mail a registration form to you.

Finally, we will offer a one day novice debate camp on Tuesday, September 8th from 9-4. This is a mandatory camp for all students who are signed up for the senior debate club unless they have attended another debate camp over the summer. However, all club members who are 12 and older are invited to attend this camp even if they are not signed up for debate. I believe attending this camp would be a nice way of exposing students to the wonderful world of team policy debate.

First day of club: Tuesday, September 15th!

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you,

S'mores in July

Since tonight looks like a great night for a fire (55 degrees in July!), I thought I'd share a few traditional and non-traditional S'mores ideas:

Traditional S'mores
(Working at the nature center, I've found that there are quite a number of people who have never had S'mores and don't know how to make them...)
Ingredients:
Large Marshmallows
Hershey chocolate bars
Graham Crackers
Toast marshmallows over the fire - some people like them golden brown and some people like them burnt to a crisp. Place one to two marshmallows on half of a graham cracker. Top the marshmallows with hershey bar. Top hershey bar with an additional half of a graham cracker.

Chocolate Chip Cookie S'mores
(Someone told us about these this year - they are yummy!)
Ingredients:
Large Marshmallows
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Toast marshmallows over the fire - some people like them golden brown and some people like them burnt to a crisp. Place one to two marshmallows on a chocolate chip cookie then top with an additional chocolate chip cookie.

Caramel S'mores
(Or add the roasted caramel to your S'mores for an added treat)
Ingredients:
Ritz Crackers
Caramel Squares
Directions:
Place unwrapped caramel squares on a stick roast like you would marshmallows (not too long or they will melt completely). Place the caramel in between two Ritz Crackers.

Apple Treat
(Delicious!)
Ingredients:
Apples
Cinnamon/Sugar
Roast apple over fire until skin is loose then peel the skin off the apple, being careful not to burn yourself because the apple is very hot. Sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar.

Have fun around the campfire and don't forget to include a few fun songs or stories. It's a great time to tell stories of I remember when... and to have the kids join in with their favorite memories.

There are hundreds of exhibits in the exhibit hall, including two featuring our marriage ministry and my homeschool curriculum.

Bob and I will be doing four workshops, that you don't want to miss.

1. Homeschool Your Preschooler on $1 a Day (Cheryl Moeller/Author, Homeschool Mom of 6) – Are you planning on homeschooling your preschooler, but can’t afford all the curriculum you picked out? Or perhaps, you already have your homeschool curriculum, but still need additional ideas and supplemental materials? Who doesn’t need help these days with the rising costs that impact a family’s budget? This is your key to a “Do-it-Yourself” preschool homeschool workshop, where you’ll be given you the tools to frugally homeschool your preschooler on $1 a day. All ideas are tried and tested in the trenches with homeschool mom of 6, conference speaker and author Cheryl Moeller, M.A.R.

2. Six Steps to Connecting with the Heart of Your Child (Bob and Cheryl Moeller) All children desire to have a deep and life-long heart connection with their parents. Parents share this same desire to be connected to the hearts of the their children. Yet, for this heart connection to take place it requires a deliberate effort, focus and caring on the part of parents. Bob and Cheryl Moeller, homeschool parents of six children, will share with you six practical steps to use with your homeschool children to stay connected to their hearts on a day to day basis. They will help you understand the dynamics of the heart as God created it to work; what locks and unlocks a child’s heart; and how to speak into the heart of our kids giving them the love, security and sense of belonging they so desperately desire.

3. Teach Your Children 12 Crucial Life Lessons to Avoid Making Huge Mistakes (Dr. Bob Moeller) Nothing is learned by quitting, more people are counting are on than you realize, never burn bridges behind you, are some of the 12 Valuable Life Lessons that you’ll want to know to teach your children. These practical, transferable concepts can guide your children to make wise, and life-giving choices each day. From truths learned from personal experience, as a husband of 30 years, homeschool dad of 6, pastor, author and TV host, Dr. Bob Moeller will challenge you to instill in your children 12 disaster busters.

4. 10 Reasons Why Loving Your Spouse is the Ultimate Homeschool Curriculum (Dr. Bob Moeller) Discover 10 Reasons why making your marriage and spouse the priority before your children and homeschool, is so vital. By learning and living this valuable home-life curriculcum, children will be set on a course to make them more productive, successful and well adjusted in their future lives and homes. Loving your spouse is an important life lesson children need to learn and see modeled, to ensure a healthy future. Summer Nature Journal - Parts of a Flower

There are so many flowers blooming all around us at this time of year. It's a great time to add to your child's nature journal. One idea is to dissect different types of flowers, learn the parts of the flowers and what makes them each unique.

For example did you know a Calla Lily is considered a "naked" flower because it has no petals or sepals? Or that a Tiger Lily is considered a "monocot" because it's petals are in multiples of three?

One site with worksheets and information:

Have fun and enjoy the beauty all around!

Kids Science Challenge

Hello, my name is Machan Taylor and I work with the Kids Science Challenge, a free nationwide competition for third to sixth graders, made possible by the National Science Foundation. Many homeschoolers participated in the first year of the Kids' Science Challenge, and we hope you'll have a look at this fun way to turn kids on to the world of science.

Our website offers games, downloadable activities, videos, and curricula aligned to national standards. Kids learn about several fields of science, and are invited to submit an experiment or problem for our select group of kid-friendly scientists and engineers. The children whose entries are chosen, receive wonderful prizes and get to collaborate with the scientists to see their ideas come alive. The first thousand entrants receive free science activity kits and your home schoolers can use our activities to jump-start their own science projects at home.

Check out www.kidsciencechallenge.com for stories, pictures and videos of last year's winners. On our press page, you'll see some of the great national and local stories written about us.

I hope that you'll join our efforts in getting the word out to the thousands of home schooled children that would enjoy and benefit from this wonderful program and exciting opportunity. We would greatly appreciate if you would be willing to display a banner on your site, send out an email blast to your members in a newsletter, or let other home schoolers know about us however you may see fit.

Finally, for those of you that are networking online, please visit our Facebook and Twitter pages so we can connect!

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Machan Taylor

If You Give A Mouse A Cookie - Street Theatre

If you Give A Mouse A Cookie - Street Theatre

Schaumburg Town Square (located in front of the Schaumburg Library)

Wednesday, July 8th
7 pm - 7:45 pm

Who would ever suspect that a tiny little mouse could wear out an energetic young boy? This zany tale of warped logic is a sure-fire giggle-generator! Sponsored by the Schaumburg Park District.

Note: Be sure to bring a blanket or chairs to sit on during the show. There is an Oberweiss right next to Town Square if you're in the mood for a treat during or after the show. Restrooms are available at the library.

Fourth of July Treat

Happy Fourth of July!

Our favorite Fourth of July treat:

Traditional Muddie Buddies

9 cups Chex, any variety
1 pkg semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup margarine or butter
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Measure cereal into a large bowl (I use a bowl with a lid); set aside. Melt chocolate chips, peanut butter and margarine/butter either on the stove top or in the microwave. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Pour chocolate mixture over chex in bowl, stir until evenly coated. Add powdered sugar. Place lid on the bowl and shake until well coated. Store in airtight container in refrigerator (I use large ziploc bags so we can take them to the fireworks display).

My son has a mild peanut allergy. I also have two kids that get headaches from eating chocolate. So I changed the chocolate to white chocolate and removed the peanut butter from the recipe last year.

White Chocolate Muddie Buddies

9 cups Chex, any variety
1 pkg white chocolate chips
1/4 cup whipping cream
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Measure cereal into a large bowl (I use a bowl with a lid): set aside. Melt white chocolate and magarine/butter either on the stove top or in the microwave. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Pour white chocolate over chex in bowl, stir until evenly coated. Add powdered sugar. Place lid on the bowl and shake until well coated. Store in airtight container in refrigerator (I use large ziploc bags so can take them to the fireworks display).

Backpack Buddies Club

The kids and I are looking forward to packing backpacks with Backpack Buddies. We have had so much fun participating in this wonderful organization.

Julie

Who are we?

We started out as two sisters who were looking for a service project for our children. We wanted our kids to learn how to work and how to serve other people. This project gives our kids a chance to experience the gift of giving.

It also is an attitude-shift on their part from concern about themselves to concern for others.

We decided to help local homeless children and children in need. Currently we are delivering filled backpacks quarterly to homeless shelters, churches, and food pantries.

The Daily Herald, USA Weekend, and the Points of Light Foundation awarded us local winners of "making a difference" on Make a Difference Day 2001. A check for $500.00 was awarded to the charity of our choice, The Elgin Community Crisis Center.

The idea has caught on. We are now being helped by other moms, their kids, community members, churches, schools, and other organizations. Since our first delivery in October 2001, we have delivered almost 3,200 backpacks! We are continuing to grow and now have become a 501(c)(3) Corporation.
