Kids Science Series: Scientific Illustration

Illustrator Suzanne Wegener from the Morton Arboretum will be joining us for a workshop on scientific illustration. Learn what makes scientific illustration special and try your hand at drawing museum specimens. This is a great hands-on program for young artists ages 6 and up, but all are welcome. Adults welcome too!

Professor Paul Sorensen will share his passion for plants, particularly the Shooting Star, a prairie flower that will be blooming in early May. Learn what makes this plant special and discover where to find it.

Dissection Workshop: Frogs
May 18 , 6:30-8:00 pm
Non-members: $20/person, Members: $18/person

Dan Mitchell, biology teacher at Kishwaukee College, will lead participants through the dissection of a frog. Everyone gets their own specimen. This class is open to ages 9 through adult; children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited, register today by calling 815-895-9777.

I Like Spiders & Snakes Weekend
Dozens of varieties of spiders and snakes will be on display, with demonstrations throughout the weekend. On Saturday from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. Rob Carmichael, director of the Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest, will showcase venomous reptiles, including a cobra, rattlesnake and Gila monster or beaded lizard, along with some non-venomous reptiles, like a crocodilian. Formal presentations will be given at 12:30 and 2:30.

On Sunday from 12:00-4:00 a variety of tarantulas will be showcased, including a Mexican red knee, salmon pink bird eater, pink toe, and Star burst baboon. Emperor scorpions will round out the exhibit. Art and Kathleen Schamne of Art's Arachnids will give formal presentations at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.

Attention Boy Scouts! This program can help you earn the Reptile and Amphibian merit badge and Insect Study merit badge.

Maximum: 20
Come as an individual or as a family, bring your bucket, and get ready to unearth evidence of prehistoric life. Includes brief geologic history of the area. Tools provided. Bring a small bucket or bag to take home your treasures. Wear heavy shoes and long pants. Adult helmets will be provided. Kids should bring bike or ski helmet if they have one. Gloves, safety glasses, a hat, sun screen, water & camera are suggested. Meet at Vulcan Materials quarry, 15622 Barber Greene Road, Sycamore.
This class is part of the summer program schedule. Pre-registration is required.

Amazing Animal Adventure
Amazing Animals by Samantha will showcase twelve animals from their live-animal collection. Expecting to visit are an African Serval Cat, a Biturong (Bear-cat), and several trained animals that have appeared on Animal Planet and Jay Leno. Photo ops will be available for $5 after the show.
