S'mores in July

Since tonight looks like a great night for a fire (55 degrees in July!), I thought I'd share a few traditional and non-traditional S'mores ideas:

Traditional S'mores
(Working at the nature center, I've found that there are quite a number of people who have never had S'mores and don't know how to make them...)
Ingredients:
Large Marshmallows
Hershey chocolate bars
Graham Crackers
Toast marshmallows over the fire - some people like them golden brown and some people like them burnt to a crisp. Place one to two marshmallows on half of a graham cracker. Top the marshmallows with hershey bar. Top hershey bar with an additional half of a graham cracker.

Chocolate Chip Cookie S'mores
(Someone told us about these this year - they are yummy!)
Ingredients:
Large Marshmallows
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Toast marshmallows over the fire - some people like them golden brown and some people like them burnt to a crisp. Place one to two marshmallows on a chocolate chip cookie then top with an additional chocolate chip cookie.

Caramel S'mores
(Or add the roasted caramel to your S'mores for an added treat)
Ingredients:
Ritz Crackers
Caramel Squares
Directions:
Place unwrapped caramel squares on a stick roast like you would marshmallows (not too long or they will melt completely). Place the caramel in between two Ritz Crackers.

Apple Treat
(Delicious!)
Ingredients:
Apples
Cinnamon/Sugar
Roast apple over fire until skin is loose then peel the skin off the apple, being careful not to burn yourself because the apple is very hot. Sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar.

Have fun around the campfire and don't forget to include a few fun songs or stories. It's a great time to tell stories of I remember when... and to have the kids join in with their favorite memories.
