HOME SCHOOL SKATE AND PLAY PROGRAM

Rockford Park District's Home School Program offers discounted ice skating and indoor playground admissions at Carlson Ice Arena and Sapora Playworld for home school students of all ages.

The program is offered every Wednesday, September 9, 2009 through May 12, 2010, and features indoor ice skating from 2:20 until 4:20 p.m. (No Home School Program on December 23 or December 30.)

During the sessions, Playworld indoor playground will be open for children 12 and younger.

The discounted per person prices are as follows: skating admission, $2.50 ($3.00 non-resident); skate rental, $1.50, and Playworld admission, $2.50 ($3.00 non-resident). The family package for $20.00 ($25.00 non-resident) includes skating admission, skate rental, and Playworld admission for up to four family members.

Burpee Museum has been offering classes for students who are home schooled for over 8 years. The current teacher home schooled her own four children, has extensive experience as a teacher in a local home school co-op, and has been on the education staff at Burpee for 6 years. Classes are for 9 – 13 year olds and are offered three times a month, with a monthly theme. Participants can sign up for the entire month, or pick and choose which classes to attend. Workshops for 6 – 8 year olds are offered twice a month and follow the same theme as the classes. These classes are inquiry based; hands-on activities and experiments are the core of all classes. The curriculum for the 9 - 13 year old classes is based on ISGS Geo Activities by the Illinois State Geological Survey, funded by a National Science Foundation Grant. The curriculum for the 6 - 8 year old workshops is based on the AIMS (Activities Investigating Mathematics and Science) curriculum. Students will measure, estimate, observe, predict, classify, and gather and record data.

Kingsway Farm is offering to homeschool families a riding opportunity this fall.

This class will consist of 4 weeks of table instruction and riding. The table instruction will include safety, prey/predator, colors, grooming, saddling, and ground work. This year we plan to include more speech activities for younger students, too!

Speech classes meet weekly in Naperville on Tuesday evenings from 5-7 P.M. Students prepare and polish speeches in several categories as they prepare for various competitions.

Debate classes meet weekly in Naperville on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 P.M. Beginning students learn debate concepts, research the topic in incremental steps with a group, and practice debating skills with the accountability and discipline of a classroom setting.

The cruises provide passengers with interesting information about Rockford’s history with a glimpse of some of the most stately homes located along the Rock River, and are one of the many low-fee activities the Park District offers the community. The lunch and dinner cruises aboard the Forest City Queen riverboat offer a variety of dining options for all ages.

Take your best shot of your favorite animal and enter it in the Chicago Zoological Society’s annual Photo Contest. With its beautiful gardens and extensive animal collection, Brookfield Zoo provides the perfect setting to capture a winning shot (however, pictures do not have to be taken at the zoo). The grand prize winner will receive round-trip main cabin air transportation for two, to any American Airlines/American Eagle destination in the contiguous United States, courtesy of American Airlines.

Entries must be 8 by 10 inches, and either color or black and white, and they must feature an animal (photos with people will not be accepted). Photos should not be framed or matted. To enter, simply fill out an entry form (available online or at the zoo’s north and south information kiosks) and tape it to the back of your photo (one entry per person). Judges will select one grand prize winner from all entries. In addition, a first-, second-, and third-place winner will be selected in two age categories—adult (12 and older) and child (11 and under). Photo Contest winners will be notified by phone and invited to an awards reception on Saturday, November 14. Winning photos will be displayed in the zoo’s Discovery Center lobby through mid-December as well as on www.CZS.org.

Home-School Programs
The History Center's Home-School program includes a short, hands-on lesson plus an accompanying project. A different historical theme is covered each month.

The third Wednesday of each month from 10:00-11:00am or 1:00-2:00pm, September-May. An adult must accompany children to programs. Geared toward children ages 5-12. Advance registration required: 847-391-5399.

September 16: Ice Age Illinois
Discover the history of Illinois during the Ice Age and learn about animals like the giant beaver, mastodon, and woolly mammoth.

October 21: Day of the Dead
Listen to a short presentation about the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and make a colorful, skeleton-themed shadow box called a nicho.

November 18:Mummies 101
Learn how the ancient Egyptians made mummies and mummify a piece of fruit.

December 16: Native American Clothing
Explore the different materials used by Native Americans to make & decorate clothing including animal skins, beads and porcupine quills. Take home samples of some of these materials.

January 20: Fur Trade
Act out the role of a fur trader by playing a game with reproduction artifacts.

February 17: Lake Michigan Ships
Learn the interesting history of the ships that sailed Lake Michigan including a pirate ship in the 1850’s. Build a simple ship model during this program.

March 17: Journeying West
Learn about pioneers’ journey west by doing activities from the 1859 book “The Prairie Traveler.” Learn how to cross a river, what native plants are edible and what supplies pioneers needed to pack for their journey.

April 21: Toys that Trick Your Brain
Try out some 19th century toys that create optical illusions including a stereo viewer, thaumatrope, and phenakistoscope. See yourself in 3D by making a stereo card featuring your picture.

May 19: Victory Gardens & V-Mail
Learn about the homefront experience during WWII by planting a victory garden and writing your own V-Mail letter.

Cocoa Cabana Field Trip

Hello,

My name is Ronda Priola and I am an advocate of homeschooling. I homeschooled my son and daughter. My son just earned his degree and my daughter is about to enter nurses training.

My reason for writing is that I own a hand-dipped chocolate store in West Dundee and we offer field trips for homeschoolers. The field trip includes a video about chocolate, its history and how it is grown and produced, and a tour of our kitchen with a candy making demonstration. The children finish their tour by making their own chocolate pizza. The cost is $6 per child. Ages 5 and up are welcome. Maximum group size is 20.

**Both students and parents are encouraged to sign up for a Basic Safety Lesson but it is not required to participate in Homeschool Days. This introductory Basic Safety Lesson covers knot tying, belaying, rope management skills, the use of technical equipment, and climbing commands. An emphasis is placed on the skills needed to climb and belay in a controlled environment. Although belay skills can be learned by any individual who is ready to learn them, please keep in mind that you must be 14 or older to test out to belay at Vertical Endeavors. Lesson offered on Mondays, 7-9pm and Saturdays, 12-2pm.

Wheaton College Symphonic Band's Children's Concert

The Wheaton College Symphonic Band's Free bi-annual Children's Concerts are Tuesday, October 6 and Thursday, October 8.

The theme for this program will be "American Faces" and I know your students will be excited about the sights and sounds they will experience during fast-paced 45 minute concert. Utilizing our projection system during the performance will provide high-resolution digital images and video to enhance our theme, as well as live footage of the band members as they perform.

HI! I’m Sue Pruett, and I have been teaching my children with the gentle ways of Charlotte Mason for 9 years. I continue to study and learn of her ways, and constantly improve my methods. I love this way of educating my children, and I desire to show others how gentle and natural this way is! Gracin first entered America’s homes as one of the most charismatic and distinctive performers in the second season of American Idol, the first to bring country music to the pop-oriented hit show.

Beacon Homeschool Group (formerly H.E.L.P.)

Beacon is now officially open for business. Formerly the H.E.L.P. group, we have changed the name to update our image and what we stand for. Our key verse is Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.” A Beacon has always been known for showing the way to lost seaman as they navigate the seas. The Beacon Homeschool Support Group is also hoping to be there to provide a hope for those trying to navigate their way through the rough waters of home education and discipleship. In its basic essence, home education is more than academia. It’s discipleship. We are sharing with our children our values and philosophies that no one else can do better than us. It is our core beliefs that we pass on to our children by being with them 24/7. Luke 6:40 says “A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.” I’m grateful for what we’ve been able to accomplish so far.

Now back to Beacon. We have a new website (thanks to Danielle Dittmer, webmaster extraordinaire!!) and all your business can be done right through the simple click of your mouse through the website. If you’re not click saavy, don’t worry. At every meeting, we’ll have hard copies of all the things you’re missing on the web……like activities news, membership packet, field trip RSVP forms, etc. The new website is www.beaconhomeschool.org. It is still not complete so bookmark it and come back often.

For the month of August we are offering a really special deal too. We know educating our own children is a big expense, so we are offering membership for only $15 for the year during the month of August only. Click on the ‘Join’ tab and download the 2009-10 registration form. We’ve updated the form to make it easier to join too. Hurry and Mail it in before August 31. After that it goes back to $25.

Get ready for our kick-off picnic too! Friday, August 21 at 3:00pm at the Twin Lakes Park in Palatine, off of route 53 and Palatine Road. We’re bringing sub sandwiches and pizza! You bring side dishes and dessert to pass. Bring drinks for your own family and voila…. a picnic!! Have the kids bring their finest nautical attire! It will be a fun afternoon catching up with everyone. You can even sign up to join Beacon at the picnic too!! Please RSVP to aapburnham@yahoo.com with number of adults and children. Please type ‘picnic’ in the subject line.

Then join us for the first Beacon meeting – Tuesday, August 25 at 7:00-9:00pm. If you miss the picnic, you can sign up at that time too and take advantage of the new lending library. We’ve tossed the old and kept the most current books with topics that are of most interest. We’ll have a meet and greet meeting and introduce you to the new board and details about the new field trip procedures. Field trips can now be set up by anyone and it’s as easy as 1-2-3 ! No handling of money! Just set one up and we do the rest! You show up with a list of names in your hand and have fun!

For our October 27 meeting we have invited Todd Wilson, the Family Man to join us! This is a no miss event for everyone….especially dads! Make sure to let dad’s know and bring a guest and a guest’s dad! You are sure to love this evening.
