The Smithsonian Journeys to Sycamore
Journey Stories examines the intersection between modes of travel and Americans’ desire to feel free to move. The story is diverse and focused on immigration, migration, innovation, and freedom. It is accounts of immigrants coming in search of promise in a new country; stories of individuals and families relocating in search of fortune, their own homestead, or employment; the harrowing journeys of Africans and Native Americans forced to move; and, of course, fun and frolic on the open road.
What makes the exhibit even more interesting is how our local community relates to the broad themes. “It was fun to see how examples of Sycamore’s and the surrounding community stories history fit in with national trends. Especially when looking at transportation - we are all literally all connected.” Donahoe continued.
The Sycamore History Museum is open starting May 31. Hours will be Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 - 4:00 and Sundays from 1:00 - 4:00. Admission is $5 for adults, free for children under 14, and $4 for groups of 10 or more.

Field Trip Idea: Graue Mill and Museum
Frederick Graue was born in Germany, came to the United States and settled in Fullersburg, Illinois. He purchased land and began to build a waterwheel gristmill. It took five years to construct using bricks made from clay taken from the Graue farm and fired in a kiln near the site, and white oak timbers cut from a tract along the I & M canal near Lemont. The four huge one-ton buhrstones used for grinding were imported from the coast of France. The large gristmill was finished in 1852 and was used to grind the wheat, corn and other grains produced by local farmers.
The mill was a major center of economic life during the 19th century and was also used by Fred Graue to hide runaway slaves on their journey to freedom in Canada. President Abraham Lincoln reportedly visited Graue Mill during a trip from Chicago to Springfield. Three generations of the Graue family operated the mill for 60 years until modern milling methods rendered the old mill obsolete and the building was abandoned.
The building was eventually added to the properties of the DuPage County Forest Preserve District. In 1934, it was decided to restore the mill to the period of 1852-1868, the time the waterwheel was in operation. The restoration was completed in 1943 but was not maintained. In 1950, the mill property was leased to the DuPage Graue Mill Corporation, an organization formed by local residents, who repaired the waterwheel and gear system and opened the museum.
Graue Mill was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in May 1975. And in 1981 was recognized as an Illinois Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers -- the only gristmill so designated on a national or local level, representative of an important technology and era in the history of America.
Saturday & Sunday, July 11 and 12, 10am to 4 pm From Grain to GristLearn the duties of a miller's apprentice by helping with many of the steps necessary to produce stone-ground cornmeal -- from shucking to shelling to grinding to weighing to bagging.

Flat Travelers
One of our travelers, Flat Crystal:
A traveler who came to visit us from the United Kingdom:
You begin by making your "Flat Traveler." Be sure to laminate your traveler for durability when traveling. Also, be sure to include your name and email address or mailing address on the back of your traveler.
Include a travel journal or passport with your traveler. This can provide details about your traveler as well as places for the host family to write about your traveler's visit or stamp your traveler's passport.
Example from "Flat Crystal's" journal:
FLAT CRYSTAL
Date of Birth: December 9
Height: 6 inches
Favorite Color: Red
Favorite Food: Pasta
Favorite Thing to Do: Make Snow Angels in the Snow
Favorite Holiday: Crystal LOVES Christmas!
Some families choose to mail actual photographs, some choose to blog photographs online, etc.
When we return a traveler, we always include items from our area. Some examples: postcards, maps, stickers, key chains, brochures, ticket stubs from places we visited, etc.
Also, be sure to set up how long the travelers will be visiting. Two weeks is about right as the kids are anxious to have their travelers return home.
Happy Travels!
Julie
Subscribe: flat_travelers_homeschool-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
From the Yahoo Group:
This idea is based on the book "Flat Stanley".
A Flat Traveler is a person, animal or thing made out of paper. You print or draw your Traveler, laminate it and then mail it along with a blank journal to someone in another area, state or country. The host family treats your Flat Traveler as a guest and takes it places they go. After a short time your Flat Traveler is mailed back to you along with a completed journal and perhaps some photos, postcards and/or souvenirs. You look over your Flat Travelers journey and plot it on a map. Some families keep a scrapbook with all their journals, souvenirs and photos inside.
Some families send out one Flat Traveler and other families send out dozens! You can make this project as simple or as detailed as you like. This is a fun way to learn about geography and history among many other subjects!
This group has been formed to give homeschool families a group of participants to contact world wide. As a member of this group you should be prepared to host Flat Travelers from other families as well.
It is my hope that many friendships will be made through this list. Come join the fun! :)

Science Jim is offering Super Cyber-Science Camps! Each camp will be a live web-broadcast that you can watch on your computer in your own home! Imagine, camp with no lousy food, mean counselors, or raging mosquitos! It's almost too good to be true!
In Science Jim's Marvelous Magnetism Camp, we will learn the mysteries of magnetism and we will bend the force of magnetism to our will as we create electromagnets, motors and more.
In Science Jim's Gizmos and Gadgets Camp, you can attend one class or enjoy all five as we learn how to make Balloon Cars, Straw Rockets, Cork Flingin' Catapults and more!
For more information and a sample web-broadcast check out Science Jim's Super Cyber-Science Camps.
