Homeschool Soccer on Fridays

WHEN:

Weather permitting Fridays 3:30-5:30. Come the weeks you can. Don’t worry about the weeks you can’t.

3:30-4:00 come if you can to warm-up and practice on your own.
4:00-5:30 practice some basic soccer skills and join in on a fun game of soccer.

NOTE: We have the field reserved until 6 p.m. so we might go over at times. If you need to leave @ 5:30 please feel free to.

Fox Meadow Park, South Field

On the corner of Jenna Dr & Hobart Dr just west of Fox Meadow Elementary School in South Elgin

WHAT TO BRING:

soccer ball (we would like everyone to bring their own if possible)

NOTES:

-There is a port-a-potty & children’s playground for the younger ones. There is a picnic table and a few benches at the playground.

-Parent’s/guardians might want to bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on.

-Please do not drop your child off unattended. If you are unable to stay, please make arrangements with another adult to be responsible for your child.

-Younger children are welcome to play understanding that soccer can be rough at times. The ball sometimes accidentally gets kicked into people and more often than not it hurts really bad.

-If we have too large of a turn out, we will be dividing the children up into 2 groups according to age.

Each participant will receive a free month of classes if interested.

We need a minimum of 10 participants, no maximum.

Mr. Kook will go over important stranger danger techniques for our children. This is an excellent way for your children to learn and be prepared. Mr. Kook will also teach some basic intro to Karate.

My children have done this class and it has provided them with more confidence. It has also opened up the door for more discussion in this sensitive but necessary topic.

Walking helps develop fitness while building muscles, burning calories, reducing stress and creating good lifelong habits. Come join the Mileage Club as we get fit and make new friends along the way.

When: Second Wednesday of each month
September 8, October 13, November 10, December 8, January 12, February 9, March 9, April 13, May 11
Where:
Woodfield Mall, upper level in front of Sears (Upper level: 1.007 miles; Lower level: 1.015 miles)
Time: 9 am – 10 am
Who: Homeschooling families with children in K – 12th grade. Parents must be present and must participate with their children.
Cost: $5 registration fee per participating student/parent/grandparent
Registration fee due at September 8th walk (Please bring exact amount in cash)

T-shirts: An order will be placed for Mileage Club T-shirts in September. The T-shirts will be delivered at the October walk. Sizes Youth M – Adult XL: If we order 12+ t-shirts, $10 each; if we order under 12 t-shirts, $11.50 each (Size XXL: $12.50/14.00). Note: The smallest size is a Youth Medium.

2010/2011 Closing Awards will be given out on May 11th following our walk.

Ice Skating - Riverview Ice House

Rockford Park District's Riverview Ice House has added two new evening public ice skating sessions for the summer, where families can enjoy fun and exercise together while cooling off indoors, all for a low cost. A family of four can skate for just $16.00per session, including skate rental!

The new sessions are held Mondays and Wednesdays on the studio rink from 6:00 p.m. until 7:20 p.m. through August 25. Per session admission is $2.00 per person; skate rental available for $2.00.

Riverview Ice House is located just east of downtown Rockford on the river at 324 N. Madison St.

Ladybug Release party

The Elgin Community Garden Network and the Elgin Public Museum will host a Ladybug Release Party on Friday, July 16, in Lords Park.

Discover how these beautiful insects munch away at pests in your garden without any chemical sprays from ECGN's Lead Gardener Donna Askins. Bring a picnic to enjoy with your family before the festivities officially start and chat with new friends.

After celebrating the insects with a story and a song, they will release hundreds of ladybugs to help control the park's insect pests. Remember that while releasing the ladybugs, a few may land on you. Light refreshments provided and children will receive free ladybug hats while supplies last.

Fall Driver's Ed in Streamwood

We currently have interest from 5 homeschool teens for this fall, and we need to have 3 more students to establish a class.

After reviewing the information, please let me know if you would like to commit to the class. There is no money due until 9/7, however I do need to submit each student's name, address, phone # and birthdate. So if you are intertesed in joining the class, please send me that info for your child.

Phyllis Horst to perform at Sycamore History Museum

Once upon a time . . . . Phyllis Horst tells stories and sings songs to audiences of all ages. With the help of her guitar, her humor, and her bag of strange things she will take children and adults to wonderful places in their imagnation. From frogs, to princes, to the moon and back again! Sit back, relax, have fun and . . . live happily ever after.

“We are looking forward to having Phyllis Horst perform at the museum. She is a great story teller who really engages her audience,” explained Michelle Donahoe, Executive Director of the Sycamore History Museum. “Bring dinner, dessert, a blanket or lawn chair, and enjoy a free family event right here in town,” she continued.

The concert will be held at the Sycamore History Museum, 1730 N. Main Street, on Thursday, July 14 at 7:00 p.m. The program is free and open to the public, donations are welcome. The Mary E. Stevens Concert & Lecture Fund is generously funding this event.

Just a reminder that we will be holding auditions for Wizard of Oz July 22, 23 & 24. Auditions are by appointment for ages 8 through adult. Please call 630-540-4834 to arrange audition after reading the audition information below.

Wizard of Oz Auditions:

To audition for Wizard of Oz you must have reached your 8th birthday by the audition date (July 22, 23, or 24), sorry no exceptions. July 22 & 23 are in the pm and July 24 begins in the morning and will continue as needed.

The production goes up October 14-17.

Rehearsals will be Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday evenings and some Saturdays beginning in late August/early September.

You may either call 630-540-4834 or email sfitzsimons@bartlettparks.org for an appointment. You need to leave the following information:

*Name, age, phone number, email address, date you would like to audition. A call or email will be returned to you with a confirmation of your appointment. No friends or family are allowed in the audition room with you.

*You must bring your audition form with you filled out, attach a photo to the form, and be prepared for your audition.

If cast in Wizard of Oz: there is a program fee of $53 for resident and $63 nonresident. You will receive 2 comp tickets for a performance, the use of the libretto, and a production T-shirt. You will need to provide your own make-up, shoes as needed, undergarments including but not limited to tights, leggings, and leotards. Costumes will be provided.

Fox Valley Homeschool Teen Literature Group

Hi, fellow homeschoolers.

My name is Leo Heska; I'm a homeschooling dad (I do half the teaching of our 14-year-old son). We've been homeschooling now for 4 years.

Besides homeschooling, I also lead the Fox Valley Homeschool Teen Literature Group ("Lit Group" for short). We meet in Batavia weekly during the school year. We invite all homeschoolers regardless of creed or curriculum.

I am about to start actively recruiting for the 2010/2011 homeschool year, but before I do, I want to send a quick e-mail to some of the folks I've corresponded to, and to homeschool support groups. I warmly invite homeschooled teens, to join us in our literature discussion and study, and also in the fun activities we do. At present, the Lit Group is nearly full (a size of about 11 teens is ideal; currently we have ten signed up, but can accommodate more). I want people I've already contacted to get "first crack" at the remaining slots.

We study both "classic" literature, and also easier "teen reads." Teens stay in our group for several years, and I find that a diet of pure classics for 5 or 6 years running can be offputing.

But literature is only half the purpose of our group - the other purpose, equally if not more important, is to give homeschooled teens a chance and a place to meet and have fun with other smart homeschoolers in a safe, positive, friendly, fun environment.

Up and At’em Animal Chores – May 29, 7:30-9:00am
Get up and get outside to help with the morning chores. After milking the cows and feeding the livestock, feed yourself with a light breakfast around the farmhouse stove. Please dress for the weather. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This program requires pre-registration by May 25th. The cost of this program is $12 for residents, $18 for non-residents.

Sensing the Night – June 4, 7:30-9:00pm
Awaken your senses to a late spring twilight walk where the mysteries of nature await. Guided by a ‘nocturnal-loving’ naturalist, tap into your senses. This program requires pre-registration by June 1st. The cost for this program is $6 for residents, $9 for non-residents.

Great Hercules Cluster – June 5, 9:30-11:00pm
Join Chicago Astronomical Society members as they set their telescopes for a peek at the night skies. This program is held on the Nature Center’s grounds; just follow the signs to the viewing site. In case of inclement weather, slides or a video will be shown indoors. This program is FREE!

Aprons featured during May Brown Bag Lunch

Fashion and the history of fashion are very popular topics. However, the apron is usually not usually one of the items highlighted in trendy magazines or tv shows. Yet, the apron has a long and interesting history. On May 6, the Brown Bag lunch at the Sycamore History Museum is featuring a presentation on aprons. John Vidlack will explore this fascinating aspect of clothing in daily life.

Aprons have played an integral role in the lives of women throughout history. On any given day an apron might wipe a child's tears, flour from a woman's hands and sweat from her brow, ward off a chill, carry vegetables from the garden and eggs from the coop, or shoo flies from the table. Apron fashions may have changed a little over time, but their function has remained the same. Join SHM for a look in to the fascinating history of aprons from Colonial America to the twenty-first century.

The Brown Bag lunch is held on the first Thursday of the month from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. May through September the programs are held at the Sycamore History Museum, 1730 N. Main Street. Do you want to change the world? Minds for Design – Engineering Series challenges you to sharpen your math, science and technology skills as you discover engineering. You will work in groups on various engineering projects ranging from building simple electrical circuits to engineering your own invention. You don’t have to be great at science, or know anything about engineering or even be a Girl Scout! Just come to be bold, inventive, creative and awesome!

The Minds for Design – Engineering Series is funded in part by a grant from the United States Department of Education.

During this five-day workshop, you will learn about the design process, create electrical circuits, conduct material engineering experiments and design and build your own invention. You’ll have the opportunity to tour Sherman Hospital’s new geothermal lake and learn how this environmental resource heats and cools the new hospital.

Explore music around the globe at this fun-filled, five-day camp! We'll investigate music on every continent and discover music computer programs in our MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) computer lab. Camp cost includes all classes, presentations, and lunch served in the Judson University cafeteria. Students playing band instruments will be placed in band. Students playing stringed instruments will be placed in smaller instrumental ensembles. Vocal students will participate in vocal ensembles.

2010 IMEA Audition Preparation Class
This section of the camp is open to Junior High string players and all Senior High orchestral instrumentalists who intend to audition for District 9 and All State competitions in the fall of 2010. Students will prepare the audition material through both large ensemble rehearsals and instrument-specific assistance in sectionals. Mock auditions and experiencing the collective sound of the orchestra will give participating students a greater understanding of the repertoire and a competitive edge!

HALF-DAY CAMP
Entering Kindergarten – 2nd grade: $100
Please join us for this fun-filled exploration of music basics. Students will focus on fun rhythm games, simple instrument building, singing, and lots of FUN!!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CAMP
Entering 3rd-5th grades: $200

Computer-based instruction in composition (basics of Sibelius software) and rhythm software. Fun, games, vocal ensembles, recorder instruction, master classes, recitals, and more! Add two 30-minute private lessons taught by Judson University faculty for only $50 in piano, guitar, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, saxophone, flute, bassoon, clarinet, oboe, or drums!

JUNIOR HIGH & HIGH SCHOOL CAMPS
Entering 6th-8th grades/ Entering 9th-12th grades: $250

Computer-based instruction in music courses such as music appreciation, ear training, theory, and composition. Also, students will learn basics of such music software as Sibelius (composition), and Practica Musica (theory). Also included are private lessons, recitals, and vocal/instrumental ensembles. Red Oak Nature Center to hold Earth Day celebration on April 17

Red Oak Nature Center will celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 17, with an afternoon of fun and games designed to raise awareness on how to keep the planet healthy.

From 1 to 4 p.m., visitors are invited to take part in a variety of fun and educational activities that promote recycling to make for a more Earth-friendly household.

Admission is free to all, with one condition – each child should bring 12 washed aluminum cans as their entry “ticket.” The cans will be incorporated into the games, then recycled at day’s end. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Interactive games for children will be played throughout the afternoon, including Red Oak’s popular “Aluminum Can Olympics.” Stations will be set up for games such as can bowling, can stack, can minefield and can transporter. A can-themed scavenger hunt also will take place.

Families are encouraged to attend and discover how each family member can make an impact that helps preserve a better Earth for tomorrow. The event also serves as a great service project for Scout groups.

The Fox Valley Park District’s Red Oak Nature Center is located on Route 25, one mile north of Route 56 (Butterfield Road). The park stretches for 40 scenic acres along the east bank of the Fox River and features a central museum with hands-on displays. Admission is always free. ENTICE Educator Workshops

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources' (IDNR) Division of Education sponsors educator workshops through the ENTICE program. These workshops offer Continuing Professional Development Units for teachers.

Please register for workshops through the link shown with each workshop description. A nonrefundable registration fee is required. The fee is $10.00 per person per workshop unless stated otherwise in the workshop description. Should you have questions about workshop registration please email (dnr.teachkids@illinois.gov) or call (217-524-4126) the IDNR Division of Education. Should the IDNR cancel a workshop, registrants will receive a credit certificate toward registration at another workshop of the same type (on site or online). Some restrictions apply.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS
ENTICE workshops provide natural resources information, instructional methods and supplemental educational materials. When incorporated into lessons with students, the materials provided encourage and promote stewardship of our state’s natural resources. ENTICE also offers participants the opportunity to network with other educators in a friendly, cooperative, learning environment.

Illinois ENTICE provides the following items for participants:

* opportunities to connect with natural resources and education professionals
* lesson plans and activities correlated to the Illinois Learning Standards for teachers, continuing professional development units

Course Name: The Massasauga: Illinois Prairie Rattlesnake

Course Name: The Greater Prairie-chicken

The greater prairie-chicken was once represented with millions of individuals in Illinois. Now there are approximately 200 birds remaining in two southeastern Illinois counties. Participants in this workshop will learn about the life history and management of the prairie-chicken in Illinois and will observe the mating activities of the birds from blinds on the booming grounds. Activities will be targeted to teachers of grades four through 10. PLEASE NOTE: The March 26 segment of this workshop will begin well before sunrise as we gather at the site office then walk in the dark to the blinds. We will remain in the blinds until approximately 8:30 a.m., and the workshop will conclude by 9:30 a.m. Only 15 participants will be allowed. Our next Family Lego Day at the library is Sunday, April 18! Children of all ages come with your favorite adult and enjoy an afternoon of creating with Legos. Lego Day will take place in the large meeting room on the first floor of the library.The library will provide all of the Legos for this program. Please do not bring any Legos from home - they might get mixed up with the Library's Legos and get lost.
We have been accepting Lego donations for awhile, and think we have enough for families to enjoy a fun, creative program. Donations of Legos are still being accepted.

Cold Blooded Creatures Reptile Program:
Saturday, April 24, 10 a.m.

Jim Nesci brings five ambassadors from the reptile world to the library's Big Meeting Room. The group includes snakes, an alligator, lizards and a tortoise. Jim's message to conserve and protect reptiles is the focus of his show. During his presentation, respect and safety for the animals and participants takes front stage. The Cold Blooded Creatures Reptile program will last about an hour...long enough for everyone to see, touch and learn about the animals. A generous gift from the Mary E. Stevens Concert and Lecture Fund made this Earth Day Celebration possible.

The Wednesday Morning Movie Series will be returning for the summer on June 16th! This year the Series will be 9 weeks, and will run every Wednesday starting June 16th – August 11th. The Series will only be showing PG rated films, which makes it perfect for all ages! Admission is only $1 per person!

The doors will open for the Wednesday Morning Movie Series at 9:00 a.m. Make sure to come early to meet some of your favorite characters and join in on the fun games and activities. Every Wednesday the movie will begin at 10:00 a.m.

The 2nd Annual Père Marquette Home School and Parent Conference will be held Friday and Saturday, May 7-8, 2010, at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. The conference serves home schooling families, as well as parents who wish to pass on the Catholic Faith to their children at home. This year, the conference is expanding the vendor hall, and popular curriculum providers like Kolbe Academy, Mother of Divine Grace, Our Lady of Victory, and Seton Home Study School will be represented.

The conference is honored that Bishop J. Peter Sartain of the Diocese of Joliet will address Catholic parents. Speakers include Laura Berquist, James Stenson, Fr. Frank Phillips, Sr. Helena Burns, and Professor Joseph Pearce. The teen programs will feature a presentation on Lepanto, the Battle and the Poem, by Christopher Check. Last April, in conjunction with Wheaton’s Sesquicentennial Celebration, Wheaton residents attempted to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the most kites flown simultaneously (967 kites). We had over 1,100 notarized registrants that day, but unfortunately, the wind was not on our side, and we did not break the record. A certified 800 kites were set aloft that day. The families that came out for the event had a great time, so we are ready to “give it another try.”

On Saturday morning, April 17, 2010 at Graf Park in Wheaton at 9:00 a.m., the Wheaton Park District and area families will attempt to break last year’s record of 800 kites in the air simultaneously!

The schedule for the morning is as follows:

Sign in: 9 am
Grand Launch: 10 am
Chicago Fire Kite Team Demonstration: 11 am
Kite games: 11:30 am

The rain date for the event is Sunday, April 25, 2010 at 12:00 p.m.

This is a FREE event!
Bring your own kite, or purchase a special Go Fly a Kite commemorative kite. Kites are currently on sale at the Community Center and the DuPage County Historical Museum for $5 each. We will also have t-shirts available for purchase in addition to other community vendors.

DuPage Forest Preserve Summer Camps Registration

How will your child spend summer? Sitting on the couch watching TV or riding horses, feeding farm animals or exploring the outdoors? Help your child discover a new corner of the world through one of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s summer programs for kids.

All programs are day camps, and some include one-night camp outs. Enrollment deadlines vary. Registration forms are available in the Education section of the District's Web site.

“GO! Camp for Guys” will guide Boy Scouts ages 11 – 17 through a week in the outdoors July 12 – 16 at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center. Activities, which include an overnight camp out, will meet requirements of the “Environmental Science” merit badge, a badge required for advancement to Eagle Scout. Registration for “GO! Camp for Guys” costs $99 per Scout for DuPage County residents and $125 for nonresidents. For information, call the center at 630-850-8110.

During “Horse Sense” camp at Danada Equestrian Center in Wheaton, children ages 10 – 12 will enjoy hands-on experiences with horses while learning about day-to-day stable activities. Crafts, games and supervised lead-line horseback rides round out the program. Four five-day sessions are offered between June and August. Registration costs $203 per session for DuPage County residents and $232 for nonresidents. For information on “Horse Sense” camp, call the center at 630-668-6012.

At Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn, children ages 9 – 12 can participate in “Roger Raccoon Club” and discover the natural history of DuPage County through safe exploration and play in wild places. Two four-day sessions are offered in June and July, each including an overnight camp out at Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Darien. Registration costs $75 per session. For information on “Roger Raccoon Club,” call the center at 630-942-6200.

Also coordinated by Willowbrook Wildlife Center, children ages 6 – 8 can enroll in “Hodge Podge Lodge,” where they will learn about the environment and how they are part of nature. Each day will involve games, activities and stories. Each session will conclude with a cookout at Herrick Lake Forest Preserve in Wheaton. Three four-day sessions are offered in June, July and August. Registration costs $75 per session. For information on “Hodge Podge Lodge,” call the center at 630-942-6200.

And, Kline Creek Farm in West Chicago offers “Kline Creek Farmhands,” where children ages 7 – 12 can experience life on a historic working farm, including chores and domestic activities as well as games from the 1890s. Seven three-day sessions are offered during June, July and August. Fees are $75 per session. For information on “Kline Creek Farmhands,” call the farm at 630-876-5900.

As one of the stars of the Food Network's hit reality show Ace of Cakes, Geof Manthorne is known for his incredible cake creations and dry, sardonic sense of humor. As Executive Sous Chef and project lead, Geof oversees replicas. With a meticulous eye for detail, he has constructed cake models of Notre Dame Cathedral, the Taj Mahal, and a Les Paul guitar. Geof will demonstrate some basic cake decorations and show video clips from the show.

Ace of Cakes goes behind the scenes at Charm City Cakes in Baltimore, Maryland, where Geof works with owner Duff Goldman and a team of artists who work together to create as many as 15-20 cakes a week at times, some of which take up to 29 hours to build.

Happy Spring! Our spring semester is about half over, and it's time to look ahead to the next school year. Please read the following updates.

Change to the Code of Conduct:

We have prayerfully considered and decided on the following, much needed change, which applies to both the current and future semesters, for the Friday Enrichment Program:

Students of all ages must be supervised by a parent or adult supervisor (age 18 or older) during non-class hours. If your child has consecutive classes and is age 8 or older, you may leave the building. Otherwise, during off periods, your child must be supervised by you or another adult. If it is discovered that you have left your child unsupervised, you may be asked to leave LV without refund. The safety of our children is our top priority. (This includes high school students.) We have no hall monitors or enclosed study hall on Fridays due to lack of space.

Enrichment Program updates:

The new catalog of Fall Enrichment classes and the fall Friday schedule has been posted to the LV website.
You can print off the whole catalog of courses here.
Please take the next month to review these courses carefully to decide on the best plan for your children.
Registration opens to the public on May 7th, at 9 AM. The online registration will require a $5 registration fee per child and deposits for each class. These are non-refundable, so please choose carefully.

Literature and Fun? Yes, really. We do read literature, and we do have fun. Some books are easy, but if the book is hard, we take it, and make it, as easy as we can.
We're homeschooled teens (and a parent) who read and discuss books: classics like Dickens & Austen, and easier stuff. We also enjoy book-related special events.
We meet in Batavia Fridays 3:30-5:00 Sept.-June. We generally have a good time.

CIEE has partnered with the Korea Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed at promoting awareness and understanding of Korea throughout the international community, and to enhance goodwill and friendship through the implementation of various international exchange programs. The program will offer a full all expenses paid scholarship program to 100 high school students to learn about Korean culture firsthand. Students will spend two weeks in South Korea and will be hosted by Yonsei University in Seoul.

Yonsei University will organize academic lectures, tours, and cultural excursions throughout the program. The program is intended to be a cultural exchange for students who have had little to no exposure to Korean culture and is aimed at fostering understanding and diplomacy between the U.S. and South Korea.

The scheduled dates for the South Korea High School Summer Program are as follows: August 8, 2010 to August 21, 2010.

Please note the eligibility requirements for the South Korea High School Summer Program:

* Not have visited South Korea, or had any previous exposure to Korean culture, customs, or daily life
* Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (U.S. permanent residents must arrange for a visa on their own at least 2 months before departure)
* Currently be enrolled as a high school student in the U.S.
* Be entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade in high school
* Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale displayed on an official school record, report card, or transcript
* Be 15-17 years old on the date of departure
* Demonstrate through the application process their flexibility, maturity, adaptability, and readiness to face challenges of interacting in a new culture
Homeschoolers are certainly eligible, but they would need to somehow come up with a transcript/report card for the past year, and calculate a GPA. Otherwise the Korea Foundation won’t review their app.

Hello Ms. Schnepper—

I saw your post about the history programs at the Des Plaines History Center and the reference to thaumatropes caught my eye. If it would be of interest to your readers, I included a thaumatrope on the activities page of the web site for my book “Ruth by Lake and Prairie.” Ruth’s story follows her journey with other pioneering families from Ohio to Illinois through the Great Lakes so I created a schooner thaumatrope.

Homeschooling families may not be familiar with “Ruth,” but I’m proud to say that it won an award from the Illinois State Historical Society for depicting 1830”s Illinois history in an accurate and entertaining way. There isn’t a lot written about 1830’s pioneers, which is forty years before Laura Ingalls Wilder, so I’m always trying to let teachers know the book is available.

Experience Schaumburg as a rural German farm community just as it was in the 1880s at Springtime on the Farm. The annual event represents Heritage Farm's spring season "home opener" and will take place from 12-4 p.m. April 18 at Spring Valley's Heritage Farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road.

"An abundance of activities are taking place such as the birth of new animals, plowing and planting crop fields, preparing the kitchen garden and cleaning the home," said Dave Brooks, manager of Spring Valley. "This event in particular showcases many of the activities that take place during the daily interpretive demonstrations throughout the spring months; however, at this event they are all happening at once so there's lots to see and do."

Many of the hands-on activites revolve around the concept of spring cleaning, which was an important reality in the 19th century. Participants will be able to help do laundry, which was washed by hand and hung on a line to dry; beat the farmhouse rugs; and restuff bedding with fresh straw. They will also be allowed to help plant vegetables in the garden and sow oats in the field after the soil has been worked by the horses. The blacksmith will be working in his shop, butter will be churned in the springhouse, and the cow will be milked near the end of the event.

Springtime on the Farm also includes craft activities, games, refreshments and hay rides. Food and beverages are available for purchase. Admission is $2 per person and $8 per family. Children 3 and under are admitted free.

I am putting together a summer reading program sponsored by Usborne Books in which children solicit people that sponsor them to read and log a minimum of 20 minutes a day over the course of their summer break. When the program ends, they collect their sponsorship money and are rewarded with 50% of their total amount raised in their choice of Usborne Books and the other 50% will provide books to Stepping Stones of Roselle, IL (a not for profit organization dedicated to creating a path to safety and empowerment for women of domestic violence and their children). If anyone would like to participate, please contact me. We will celebrate our accomplishment with an (optional) Ice Cream Social at the Kids World Park located in Carol Stream, IL.

What is Stepping Stones?
Due to the overwhelming need in DuPage County for transitional housing for women of domestic violence, Stepping Stones was formed in 2003.

Stepping Stones’ intent is to provide emotional support, financial assistance, a safe environment and career opportunities to a family. Stepping Stones is grounded in Christ’s love for His neighbor and through a Christian outreach, guides and assists clients toward a productive life.

Stepping Stones is privileged to partner with Bridge Communities, Inc., a private, non-profit housing and mentoring program in DuPage County. The Bridge program provides homeless families with basic housing, case management, life skills, mentor training, job readiness preparation, and after school tutoring.

Once the client has been chosen, an apartment is selected by Bridge Communities; Stepping Stones then has the task of furnishing the apartment in preparation for receiving the abused woman and her children. We seek volunteer mentors who will attend the training program at Bridge to acquire the skills necessary to guide and mentor our clients. Food, clothing and other resources are donated through Stepping Stones.

For the next 18-24 months, Stepping Stones is responsible for the well-being and nurturing of our clients and Bridge continues to provide counseling services and case management to help the women take control of their lives. It is an upstream battle for survivors of physical, mental or verbal abuse. Stepping Stones, assisted by Bridge Communities, will help provide a pathway of safety and empowerment that will assure a better future for women of domestic violence.

How Can Stepping Stones Help? 1. Abused women, many with children, often seek protection, security and shelter in a "safe house." The family may move into such a facility temporarily before advancing to transitional housing and a program that helps them start a new life.

2. Due to the overwhelming need for transitional housing, Stepping Stones was formed.

3. Stepping Stones is privileged to partner with Bridge Communities, Inc., a private, non-profit housing and mentoring program in DuPage County. The Bridge program provides homeless families with basic housing, after school tutoring and job readiness training. There are social workers and mentors to provide life skills education.

4. Together we can help abused women and their children from many areas overcome the barriers and break the cycle of domestic violence, giving them a chance to:

Bird Walks at Volo Bog and McHenry Dam

The Ok-a-lee of red-winged blackbirds is a most welcome sound after a long winter! Their calls join those of migrating sandhill cranes, Canada geese, and a variety of ducks returing with the release of winter's icy grip. Hawks are paired up and repairing nests. Owls are already feeding youngsters. As the wetlands continue to warm, shorebirds and rails begin to return. Bluebirds are already back, joining the hardy cardinals and chickadees now singing a welcome to the lengthening daylight. The warmer days have brought flying insects along with swallows and flycathers to eat them. When the oaks leaf out, warblers too will return. So, bring a friend, binoculars and field guides - or borrow from us - and enjoy spring's migration on our bird walks!

All walks begin at 8 a.m. Walk times vary with weather and luck with the birds.

Kim Congdon - Piano Instructor

Kim Congdon (KC) has her degree in keyboard performance from Northern Illinois University, and has been a professional musician since the age of 17. She has made her living exclusively from music since she was 21, and is currently a member of the nationally renowned Agape Ringers, who regularly tour the United States and Europe. She has appeared on WTTW’s Artbeat and on Good Morning Arizona. She has served as a mentor for Orbert Davis’ MusicAlive! Program, a life skills development project for at-risk inner city kids. KC also teaches at national and state seminars for music directors, and has served as the Illinois State Chair for AGEHR, a musician’s guild. Over the past several years, she has released five CD’s.

KC attended Moody Bible Institute majoring in Church Music (before it had a degree program) and finished her degree in Organ Performance at Northern Illinois University.

KC is currently employed as a handbell director at St Matthew UCC in Wheaton and 1st Congregational of Western Springs where she directs both a young person's bell choir and an adult choir at each church. More information about her performances can be found at www.agaperingers.org.

KC is looking for piano students to fill some time slots on Sunday afternoon/evening and Monday morning/early afternoon. Her studio is at St Matthew UCC 1420 S Gables, Wheaton.

Typically, students stay with KC from first grade through high school graduation, some of whom have gone on to be performing artists. However, she is willing to accept students on a short-term basis at any age level including adults who want to explore a new skill.

Join in on the fun. The annual Passport to Adventure Program is your ticket to the many amazing and exciting activities that museums provide to enrich our lives and communities.

The Program begins each year on Memorial Day and runs through Labor Day. Visit a participating museum or participating local library to pick up a passport booklet filled with destinations to over 50 museums, nature centers and historical sites in the western suburbs. Many sites have designed special activities for children who participate in the program.

Fill your passport with as many stamps as you can! After visiting five sites, participants who return their passport to the location stamped on the front page of their booklet receive a Certificate noting their accomplishment. As we are enjoying the warmer weather, we are also preparing for a new season of Scoutin’ Around at Emily Oaks Nature Center, and we are looking forward to having your children join us! Encourage your homeschoolers to enjoy the wonders of spring by exploring the natural world, learning new skills, and having fun outdoors!

Session Details

Sessions are held every Tuesday at Emily Oaks from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m., with extended class times for off-site trips. The spring season begins on April 6 and ends on June 1. Children will be placed in one of two class groups based on age at time of enrollment (6-7 years old, 8-10 years old), and will participate in age-appropriate activities with others in their group.

As in past seasons, each spring session includes a nature-focused topic or skill, outdoor games or activities, and creative endeavors like crafts, dramatic performances, or storytelling. Check out the attached “Session Description” for this season’s topics!

Children will earn stickers each week as a visual representation of their participation and add it to their personal plaque, which is displayed in the classroom. After each session, participants will receive a resource page to encourage further exploration.

Nature Neighbors, a 9-week class for children 4-5 years old, is held at Emily Oaks at the same time as Scoutin' Around for your family's convenience. Stop by the Nature Center for a registration form or visit www.skokieparkdistrict.org. Registration is currently open.

Pre-registration for Scoutin’ Around is required. Registration begins TODAY for Skokie residents and non-residents. Registration deadline for ALL winter sessions is Friday, April 2. Please mark your calendars!

Wheaton College’s Jukebox Theater is staging “The Tempest” by William Shakespeare, March 24 -27. Shakespeare’s play is a comedic romance of the highest caliber, filled with comic characters and vengeful villains, strange creatures and hapless sailors, a powerful wizard and his lovely daughter.

Hi everyone,

We've been doing gymnastics classes through Excel Gymnastics in Batavia. I was talking to one of the managers after class today and he said they would open up another class to homeschoolers in their St. Charles location if there was enough interest. I told him that I would contact members of our group to see if there is any interest. We love these classes and the coaches (at the Batavia location) are fabulous. We have done gymnastics classes through the park district and other locations and our experience at Excel far surpasses these other classes. This is a great opportunity for exercise and I have even seen boosts in my kids self esteem since starting these classes. They offer classes for preschoolers at the same time, which is very nice for families with younger kids as well. Benjamin is in the homeschool class and Gabi does the preschool class.....it works out great and they both love it. So, here is what they are proposing to offer to homeschool families:

Existing class is on Thursdays from 11:00-12:00 for kids ages 6 and up. They also have preschool classes (3-4 years) and a Kindergym (5 year olds) at the same time (the preschool class is 45 minutes long). The class is at Excel Gymnastics in Batavia (2301 Main St., Batavia).

New Class: Suggested day/time is Wednesdays at 11:00-12:00 at the St. Charles location (3N800 Peck Road, St. Charles). Coach Tony said that there would be a preschool class (45 minutes) at the same time and that they could also combine 4 & 5 year olds for a Kindergym class as well. The homeschool gymnastics class would be for kids ages 6+.

The new session starts next week, but they said they could start the new homeschool class anytime (eg, if families were not ready to start next week). They need only 4 kids to start the class! Please email me ASAP if you would be interested in this class for one or more of your kids. Please let me know how many kids and their ages....and which location you would be most interested in. A note on location.....We live out in Carol Stream, and for us (according to Map Quest) there is a 3 minute difference between the St. Charles and Batavia location. If you live further east of St. Charles there may not be much difference in travel time to either location. If there is enough interest to get a new class going I will contact Coach Tony at Excel and let him know so that they can move forward with making these arrangements.

At Wonder Capes we are looking to spark the imagination of children everywhere. With a little bit of creativity & magic we can create a whole wide world of wonder for kids of all ages. Won’t you join us?

For every 10 Wonder Capes sold, 1 Comfort Cape will be donated to a child at a Children's Hospital.

Comfort Capes are made with soft flannel fabric, for hospitalized children. The goal is to be soft to the touch. Something they can snuggle with. Keep them warm. Whatever they need or want their Cape to be.

Or you can choose to donate a Comfort Cape. Honor someone special, celebrate a special occasion, or give in memory of a loved one by making a donation to Comfort Capes in their name.

FIELD TRIP: to the Field Museum on Friday 3/5/2010, meeting at 9:30am with entry at 10am to the Diamond Exhibit. All ages welcome and you are able to stay all day until 5pm.

Thanks for posting about our upcoming Ice Harvest event at Kline Creek Farm on your Northern Illinois Homeschool Monthly blog! We are proud to serve many of our area homeschooling families and count quite a few homeschoolers among our volunteers.
