Elgin Public Museum
225 Grand Blvd Lords Park

Touching on Traditions

This field trip will allow us the benefit of a personal tour guide.

It is an exhibition, in which about 50 countries' winter holiday traditions are represented. We show how Christmas is celebrated throughout the world (sometimes in familiar ways and other times not-so-familiar) as well as Chanukah, Diwali, and the New Year. Kids also encounter traditions they may never have heard of before, such as Thailand's Loi Krathong. At each country or culture, they will surely notice the differences, but we also point out some unifying factors - the gift-givers, lights as a means of celebration, appreciation for family and community.

The price of the class is $5/per child for three years old and up. Minimum of 10 children required and maximum is 30 children. This field trip will need to be prepaid.

Payment must be received by December 4th. Checks MUST BE written out to the Elgin Public Museum, Paypal will also be accepted at holisticlearners@yahoo.com. You must include with your payments: your name, email address, names of children, ages and the group in which you belong too (This is because I am coordinating many groups for one trip).

Checks can be sent to:
Pennie Burke
218 Glenbrook Court
Gilberts, IL 60136

Anyone RSVP'ing that is sending a check please be sure to send me an email to let me know you are coming along with how many paid children and that you will be sending a check. That way you get a spot! I will be stopping at 30 children so it is first come first serve in the order I receive emails and payments. Thanks!

Please note: NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN - Any persons unable to attend due to any reason on the day of the trip can consider their money a personal donation to the Museum.

Bird Sleuth - Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Dear Homeschool Family,

I'd like to tell you about a wonderful science education resource brought to you by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The BirdSleuth Science Investigator’s Kit for Homeschoolers is a wonderful way to engage your children in science through hands-on experience and outdoor investigation. And, in celebration of the start of the Project FeederWatch season, we’ve discounted the kit price by $10!

http://www.birds.cornell.edu/birdsleuth/homeschool

Kids are naturally curious about their backyard habitat and are motivated by the fun of attracting birds and contributing real data has real meaning. Parents appreciate that the lessons are hands-on, highly engaging and educational, and provide a long-term science study that is ready right out of the box.

The curriculum is built around the Project FeederWatch (PFW) citizen science project. Through PFW, people throughout North America record data about the birds that visit their feeders throughout the winter and spring. The BirdSleuth Science Investigator’s Kit invites children to become citizen scientists: learning about their local habitat, designing feeders that will attract diverse birds, identifying birds, and sending their important data to Cornell University where it will be used by our scientists and conservation biologists. Your BirdSleuth kit comes with everything you need for months of study: project access, lesson plans, a student journal and resource guide, two kid-friendly books, posters, and information about participating successfully in the project.

Give your family something meaningful, educational, and fun to do this season! Get the BirdSleuth Science Investigator’s Kit for Homeschoolers, and find out more about our special resources created for homeschool families!

Sincerely,
Jennifer Fee

Northern Illinois Home Educator's Regional Science Fair

Good Morning,

I would like to introduce an opportunity available to all homeschooling children in northern Illinois . The Nothern Illinois Home Educator's Regional Science Fair is scheduled for March 27th, 2010 at the Radisson in Rockford, IL. . Dr. Jay Wile will be sharing on Friday March 26th a seminar entitled "Teaching" the Junior High and High School Sciences at Home. Dr. Wile will also be one of our guest judges Saturday morning.

We will be hosting a workshop in January that will give the kids an opportunity to learn how to choose, research and present their exhibit. Additionally, we will touch on topics such as: the scientific method, what is a hypothesis and how to form one, and creating a research paper. The the dates and destinations of these classes are yet to be decided. We have a number of locations available for our use in Freeport and Rockford. Until we have a clear idea of the number of participants and general location we can't make a definite decision. We will have those details by the end of the month.

Please feel free to share the information with your homeschool groups. We are going to have an informational meeting on November 21st for anyone interested in joining the planning team for the science fair. Please contact me with any questions regarding the informational meeting or the science fair. I would be happy to send you an attachment with the flyer for your group.

Thanks so much.

Homeschool Girl's Basketball

Dear Home-school Families,

Our numbers are down this year in our girls basketball program. Currently
we are in desperate need of girls in grades 4th-6th to fill out our 5th/6th
grade team (we only have 3 girls and would need at least 3 more to complete
the team -- no experience necessary). We also could use more high school
girls and even girls in 7th and 8th grade. If you know of anyone who may be
interested in playing on a home-school basketball team, please get them in
contact with us. I can be reached at Crossroads at (630) 556-3202 or by
email.

Thanks,

Doug Pierson
